Miss Celeste, one of Doc Bresler’s Community Outreach Team’s Free Children’s Dental Health Program educators, recently visited Bright Star Learning and gave a fun and educational lesson on early oral health and dental care.

“Another awesome visit today from Doc Bresler’s Cavity Busters! The children love meeting your stuffed friends to practice proper tooth brushing. Danny Dog was a big hit. We are already set up for our next visit. Our instructor was phenomenal 2 years in a row. Keep up the great work; Bright Star Learning Academy will definitely recommend your dental services to our parents.” -Bright Star Learning

Jason Bresler, DMD, of Doc Bresler’s Cavity Busters on Special Olympics

Event website:

This week began the celebration of the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi. Special Olympics will always have a special place in my heart.

I started the  American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) Club with Dr. June Sisson while a dental student in 2004.  One of our first events was to provide screenings at the Special Olympics Fall games at Villanova University. Dr. Sisson asked me to take over the club when I graduated, and I have been running the Special Smiles Division of the Healthy Athletes program since 2006.

Every year I take between 20-40 dental students from Temple and Penn dental schools. Currently, the PA Special Olympics events we attend are Fall Games @ Villanova (usually first weekend in November), MedFest Health Fair @ Penn State (usually first weekend in April) and Summer games @ Penn State (usually first weekend in June).

We provide screenings, oral hygiene instructions, diet and nutrition counseling, fluoride applications and mouth guard fabrications — all while engaging the athletes in a fun and non-threatening way to encourage an increased desire to seek comprehensive dental care in their home town. We make a difference in many young athletes’ lives throughout the year.

A little over 10 years ago we (Doc Bresler’s Cavity Busters) started a new dental practice, called Special Touch Dentistry.  This practice was dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for the special needs population. It is a severely under-served community and in many cases, access to care is almost nonexistent. As a pediatric dentist, the care of special needs children is an important part of our training and service. Unfortunately, once that child becomes an adult, many pediatric dentists are not able to continue treating them for many different reasons. We decided as a family of dental care providers, that we were not going to abandon this population. and we developed a system to provide continued care in a manner that was consistent with our mission of always providing the highest quality dental care. Taking care of this population, when many others won’t, or are not capable of providing care due to complex medical and behavioral issues, is truly one of the most intrinsically rewarding aspects of our practice. We learn just as much from the patients, parents, and caregivers as they are learning from us.”

Special Touch Dentistry recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary, and we are very proud of our doctors and staff, and their dedication to our very special patients.

The holidays are here, and that means families everywhere are on school vacation. Whether you and your family will be enjoying the winter school break at home or away on a vacation, dental emergencies can happen. Doc Bresler’s Cavity Busters would like to give you our recommendations for how you and your family can be better prepared to handle dental emergencies at home, or until you return home and schedule a visit with our office. KEEP THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION HANDY IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY, ON YOUR PHONE OR IN A CONVENIENT LOCATION AT HOME!

If a dental emergency happens while on vacation and you don’t know what to do or where to go, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry website can help find a pediatric dentist near your location. Visit You can also ask your hotel concierge or manager.  Many children’s hospitals have pediatric dentists on staff who can handle dental emergencies.

If you’re out of the country, you may also contact the U.S. Embassy.  Many embassies and consulates keep lists of local medical and dental staff, which are also available online at After clicking on the country you are visiting, medical listings are found under “U.S. or Canadian Citizen Services.” Investigate the licenses of dental or medical care professionals, as well as cost in U.S. dollars.

Here are some dental emergencies and temporary emergency care options, but our advice is to follow up with quick and attentive medical care with a dentist, or at a hospital or medical care center until you can schedule a visit at our office.

  • Knocked out tooth: Hold the tooth by top (crown), rinse briefly with water, if dirty, place back into socket, hold gently with clean washcloth or gauze, and seek immediate dental care.
  • Broken or Cracked Tooth: Rinse mouth and retain tooth piece in clean, wet gauze or washcloth. Treatment can often wait until you return from vacation unless the nerve is exposed.  If you see bleeding from the tooth at the fracture line (not the gums) then immediate care is required to cover the exposed nerve tissue.
  • Loose or Lost Filling: Until you can seek dental care at home, ask your child to not chew on that side of their mouth.
  • Bitten Tongue or Lip: Gently clean area and use a cold compress or ice to help reduce swelling. If bleeding heavily, immediately get to the nearest hospital or medical care center.
  • Objects Caught Between Teeth: Gently try to remove the object with dental floss. Do not use any sharp objects to remove object.
  • Toothache or Swollen Face: Over the counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol are the most effective treatments for dental pain. If you notice swelling and you are home, you should call our office since your child may need antibiotics if an infection is present. If you are away, seek medical care from a dentist, hospital or medical care center.
  • Possible Broken Jaw from a Fall: Apply a cold compress or ice to control swelling and immediately get to a dentist, hospital or medical care center.

Parents should stay calm and focused in any childhood dental emergency, and seek appropriate care as soon as possible. The main goal it to attend to the dental emergency as best as possible, until you are able to return home and schedule an office visit.

Prevention: If children are sensitive to hot and cold foods, try to avoid them. Also, hard candy, popcorn, and other snacks that can get stuck between teeth and cause harm shouldn’t be too high on the list of things you’re eating if you’re looking to avoid a possible travel emergency. Don’t forget to pack floss and keep up with your child’s dental habits while family time away!

To a wonderful holiday season and good dental health, from your friends at Doc Bresler’s Cavity Busters.
